Holmstrom to undergo knee surgery 12/13

Ben Holmstrom's lower-body injury is to his knee, Philadelphia Flyers officials announced Thursday, and he'll need to undergo surgery to repair it.

In a statement, Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren said Adirondack's 25-year-old will have surgery on his right knee, which he injured while dumping the puck into the offensive zone in the second period of Adirondack's win over the Syracuse Crunch on Saturday night.

The surgery is set for Dec. 20 at Phialdelphia's Methodist Hospital and will be performed by Dr. Peter DeLuca. He is the same physician who performed Chris Pronger's knee surgery. Holmstrom's return to the lineup will likely depend on the extent of his damage to his knee, which the team did not disclose.

"Holmer is basically just resting right now," Phantoms coach Terry Murray said earlier Thursday, before the announcement. "There is some swelling at that needs to calm down. That probably will take a few more days and then they'll get another look at it and make a decision (as to) what's up."

When Holmstrom returns to the line-up, he will tie Jon Kalinski for second place on the Adirondack Phantoms' all-times games played list with 182. Kevin Marshall holds the top spot with 185. He also needs just six goals to tie Denis Hamel for the most goals in Adirondack Phantoms history with 96.

It is very sad but I hope he will be okay after the surgery. It is painful and complex surgery and minimum 2 months are required to recover from the surgery.
